Throughput & TCP BDP
Bandwidth-Delay Product, optimal TCP window size buffer sizing, and Mathis loss formula.
BDP (data in flight)
5.36 MB
5.625.000 Bytes
Optimal TCP buffer
5.494 KB
Window needed for full utilization
Estimated throughput (Mathis)
31.67 Mbps
Affected by 0.01% loss
Link efficiency
3.2%
Effective link utilization
How to use this tool
Calculate bandwidth delay product (BDP) from link capacity and RTT. It estimates the data in flight and helps you assess TCP window sizing.
Worked example
At 1 Gbit/s and 50 ms RTT, the BDP is about 6.25 MB. An undersized TCP window can prevent a flow from using the full link capacity.
Interpreting the result
Actual throughput also depends on loss, congestion, protocol overhead, the application and TCP algorithm. Theoretical estimates do not replace load tests.
